Angina Care Plan

Angina is a heart condition caused when the blood supply to the muscles of the heart is restricted. It usually occurs when the arteries which supply the heart become hardened and narrowed. The most common symptom of angina is a feeling of pain or discomfort in the chest. The pain can feel tight, dull or heavy and usually passes within a few minutes.

The pain can spread to the left arm, neck, jaw and back. It usually follows a period of physical activity or emotional stress. In some cases, the pain can also develop after eating a meal or during cold weather.

Some people with angina may also experience symptoms of breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, belching or restlessness. Angina sufferers are at increased risk of developing a heart attack or a stroke and must be closely observed.

The Angina Care Plan sets out a clear explanation of the resident’s issue, and will guide the nurse or carer through the process of preparing a comprehensive, individual person centred strategy.
