Conjunctivitis Nursing Care Plan

Conjunctivitis, is a common condition which causes inflammation of the membranes, conjunctiva, covering the whites of the eyes and the membranes on the inner part of the eyelids.

The conjunctiva can become inflamed as a result of a bacterial or viral infection, known as infective conjunctivitis, an allergic reaction to a substance such as pollen or dust mites, known as allergic conjunctivitis or the eye coming into contact with substances that can irritate the conjunctiva, such as chlorinated water or shampoo, or a loose eyelash rubbing against the eye, this is known as irritant conjunctivitis.

Viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are common in childhood, but they occur in adults as well. Other symptoms of conjunctivitis include itchiness and watering of the eyes, and sometimes a sticky coating on the eyelashes.

The Care Plan sets out a clear explanation of the resident’s issue, and will guide the nurse or carer through the process of preparing a comprehensive, individual person centred Care Plan.
