Dry Skin Nursing Care Plan

An elderly person tends to have diminishing amounts of natural skin oils. When oils in the skin are stripped away or diminished, the skin loses its protection. Areas such as the arms, hands and lower legs tend to be more affected by dry skin.

Symptoms include discomfort from skin tightness and itching. Cold or dry air and winter weather can worsen dry skin. As skin becomes dry it may also become more sensitive and prone to rashes and breakdown. If left untreated it may result in complications including eczema, secondary bacterial infection, cellulitis and skin discolouration. Fortunately, dry skin is usually mild and can be treated easily.

The Care Plan sets out a clear explanation of the resident’s issue, and will guide the nurse or carer through the process of preparing a comprehensive, individual person centred Care Plan.
